Percale, sateen and TENCEL™ often appear together in bedding, but they do not describe exactly the same thing. Percale and sateen mainly refer to weave structure; TENCEL™ Lyocell identifies a branded lyocell fibre.
Percale: fresh and matte
Percale uses a simple weave that creates a matte, lightweight and breathable surface. It often suits those looking for a fresh bed with a natural look and a crisp feel.
Sateen: smooth and fluid
Sateen produces a smoother surface, gentle sheen and an enveloping drape. It does not mean silk: it can be made from cotton, lyocell or a blend.
TENCEL™ Lyocell: a fibre
TENCEL™ Lyocell can be woven into sateen or other constructions. It is valued for its soft feel and moisture management; the final result depends on composition, weave and finish.
A practical choice
- For freshness and a matte finish, choose percale.
- For a smooth surface and fluid drape, look at sateen.
- For an especially enveloping feel, consider TENCEL™ Lyocell.
