Choosing organic cotton sheets should involve more than a label. The GOTS seal is a useful reference for the fibre's origin and for specific textile-processing criteria.
What does GOTS mean?
GOTS stands for Global Organic Textile Standard. In its “organic” category, a textile product must contain at least 95 % certified organic fibres. Another category, “made with organic materials”, has a lower threshold. Always check the scope stated on the product label and page.
What the certification covers
- Traceability: the certified origin of fibres is documented.
- Processes: it sets criteria for substances, water and waste during production.
- Social conditions: it includes labour requirements for certified facilities.
- Labelling: the seal is regulated; it is not simply a marketing claim.
What it cannot decide for you
GOTS does not determine which feel you prefer, nor does it replace information on weave, size or care. Certification is a decision-making tool, not a single answer.
